- Jada
Bharata: Bharata Mahârâja in his final birth.
- Jai, Jai: An acclamation of happiness. (RRV-4)
- Jagâi
and Mâdhâi: two great debauchees whom Lord
Nityânanda converted into Vaishnavas.
- Jagannâtha: "Lord of the Universe". A
deity of Krishna worshiped all over India for thousands of years,
especially in the province of Orissa, where there is a great temple of
Lord Jagannâtha at Puri. His brother is Balarâma and His
sister is Subhadrâ. Each year at Purî, during the gigantic
Ratha-yâtrâ festival, millions of pilgrims from all over
India come to worship Lord Jagannathâ, Balarâma and
Subhadrâ, as the deities ride in procession on three huge carts.
Lord Caitanya, who spent the last eighteen years of His life at
Jagannathâ Purî, used to dance and chant in ecstasy before
the Deity of Lord Jagannathâ during the yearly
Ratha-yâtrâ festival.
- Jagath:
Universe (SSS-II)
- Jalpa: (chatter): the ten different types of
strange talk or citra-jalpa that the gopîs in divine madness [divyonmâda] have, missing the
outer form of Krishna: prajalpa (denigrating), parijalpa
(exposing), vijalpa (sarcasm), ujjalpa (spite), san'jalpa (decrying),
avajalpa (belittleling), abhijalpa (plaintive remorse), âjalpa
(disgust), pratijalpa (self-depreciating hope) and sujalpa (concern)
[see 10.47:
12-21]. With
this they modelled meritoriously the emotional, irrational tie a
devotee can have being separated from Krishna.
- Jambuvan(tha): Leader of the bears (RRV2-6b) Jâmbavân is also found in
Srîmad Bhâgavatam, Canto 8, Chapter 21, verse 8.
- Janaka: Emperor of Mithila, father of Sita (RRV-17c) For sure even kings like Janaka [father of
Sîtâ, the wife of Râma] and others attained to
perfection through this work and also in consideration of what the
world needs you should act (BG. Ch. 3 : 20)
- Janakî: Sita, daughter of King Janaka,
emperor of Mithila (RRV-14).
- Janan:
Balsem (SSS-II)
- Janârdana: Krishna as the maintainer of
all living beings and the three worlds.
- Janata-Kalyan:
'peace and prosperity for the people' (SSS-IV)
- Janmashtami: Celebration of the birth of
Lord Krishna
- Japa: mantra-meditation; praying the vedic
way: repeating the holy name (repeating God's names) with the help of a
japa-mâlâ (vedic rosary) (BV-33), (BV-44).
- Japamala: Rosary. Praying cord with
108 beads plus one, for chanting of the Lord's Names. Material: Tulsi
or Nim etc.
- Jatayu: Old Eagle Chief. He was a great friend
of Dasaratha (Rama's earthly father) accompanying him on his
spatial expeditions to help the denizens of heaven (RRV2-1) The great bird who tried to rescue Sita and was killed by
Ravana.
- Jâtakarma:
rite of - or first cleansing (birth-ceremony). (BV-2) The jâtakarma birth ceremony, which can take
place when the umbilical cord, connecting the child and the placenta,
is cut, entails the touching of the tongue of the new-born trice with
ghee preceded by introductory prayers. The birth ceremony for Krishna
is also called Nandotsava. The day of yearly celebrating His
birth is called Janmâstamî [the eight day of the month
of Bhadra (August-September)]. [SB 10-5]
- Jaya
and Vijaya: two doorkeepers of Vaikuntha who were cursed on account
of offending the four Kumâra Rsis, and who thus both had to take
birth three times in the material world as great demons.
- Jaya
Deva: Great poet devotee of Sri Krishna from eastern part of
India.
- Jayadeva
Gosvâmî: a great Vaisnava poet and author of
Gîta-govinda.
- Jayantha: A son of Indra (RRV2-1)
- Jîva
Gosvâmî: one of the six Vaisnava spiritual masters who
directly followed Lord Srî Caitanya Mahâprabhu and
systematically presented His teachings.
- Jivi(a), Deva, Prakrithi: The
individual Absolute (soul), God, Nature. (BV-33), (RRV-5)
- Jnana: spiritual knowledge, wisdom. (BV-10) 'Jnana alone can confer Liberation; Karma and Bhakthi are preliminary stages that
each seeker has to go through. Jnana alone reveals the essential
one-ness of the Universe, the one-ness of matter and matter, of time
and space, of the most distant star with the smallest speck glittering
in the sunlight' (SSS-II); The path of discrimination
and elimination of illusion (RRV2-12b)
- "Jnana
Devathu Kaivalyam": The supreme importance of holy acts
prescribed in the Vedas and Sastras. (BV-29)
- "Jnanam
Maheswaraad ichcheth": Desire from Maheswara, the gift of Jnana" (SSS-II)
- Jnanamarga:
Reveals the Atma as all-pervading, all-inclusive, all-sustaining. When
the illumination of Jnana is gained, the reality is experienced and man
is free. He merges with the truth from which be broke off aeons ago, on
a long and arduous adventure into the dark night of individuality. (SSS-III)
- Jnana Yoga: Yoga of knowledge, "Union of
knowledge." Describes the esoteric spiritual practices of the fully
enlightened being, or jnani.
- Jnani: The truly wise (RRV2-2).
